Illustrator Notes

 -Creating a new canvas (document)
     press Command+N to make a new canvas
     3 sections of Adobe Illustrator (Toolbox [left], Menu bar [at the top], Panels [right])
     PROFILE: Print, SIZE: Letter, ORIENTATION: Portait

- Interface navigation, drawing tools (Illustrator's shapes & using the Pen Tool)
    Rectangle Tool (M) - makes squares and rectangles with sharp edges
    Rounded rectangle tool - makes rectangles with rounded edges
    Ellipse tool - draw circles and ovals
    Polygon Tool - draws convex regular polygons.
    Star tool - draws stars; to add more edges tap the up arrow, to remove edges tap the down arrow; to     control the sharpness of the star, hold the command key while drawing the star.

   Selection Tool (V)- looks like a black arrow.  Use to select objects that you want to move, copy or     delete.

    Pen Tool (P) - draws line segments and curves

- Setting the Fill Color, and the Stroke Color
First, select your object or line.  
Second, click on the fill color box to set the fill color. 
OR, click on the stroke color box to set the stroke color

- Saving file formats (saving for Adobe Illustrator editing vs. Saving an image for the web)
Save for Adobe Illustrator = (.ai) <<Can ONLY be opened in Illustrator.
Save for the Internet/Your blog = (.jpeg, .gif, .png) << Can be uploaded to your blog.

Wk 3a - Introduction to Adobe Illustrator
(I) Watch Mr. Webb's demonstration and post notes to do the following on your blog:
- Creating a new canvas (document)
Press Command+N to make a new document
Illustrator has 3 main areas: the Toolbox, the Menu Bar, and the Panels
toolbox-the place on the left side of the screen that has all the tools
menu bar- the place at the top of the screen so that you can change the format of the screen  
panels- the place on the right of the screen that allow you to change color and size of the page

- Interface navigation, drawing tools (Illustrator's shapes & using the Pen Tool)
The Rectangle tool (M) - click and drag to draw a rectangle with sharp edges
Rounded rectangles tool
Elipse tool- an oval or a circle
Polygon tool
Star tool
Flare tool- makes circles that normal would appear if you point a camera into a light

Monochromatic colors- all the colors of a single hue. Monochromatic color schemes are derived from a single base hue and extended using its shades, tones and tints.














   



Negative space- is the space around and between the subject(s) of an image.

Week 2 - Signs & Visual Communication, Part 2a - Elements of Design 



CALLIGRAM-a word or piece of text in which the design and layout of the letters creates a visual image related to the meaning of the words themselves.

Doctor Who. the words are quotes from
 the show
the word being shown is shiver and
the word its self looks like its shivering 



the picture being shown is a camera. The words that make up the camera are words that photographers use and words that apply to taking the picture


The image is of a panther.
The text is just saying the word panther.
The picture is showing an ant.
And the words in the picture are naming the parts of
the ant and what kind of animal it is.













PICTOGRAMS-a pictorial symbol for a word or phrase. Pictographs were used as the earliest known form of writing, examples having been discovered in Egypt and Mesopotamia from before 3000 BC.

This pictogram is showing the company IBM. The viewer
is meant to think to take the picture as if it was a word. 





This pictogram is showing the store named Sears. The viewer
is meant to think of the ear in a plural sense in order to make
it seem like the store's name.






This pictogram is showing a search engine named FireFox.
The viewer is meant to think of fire and a fox and put it together.

Week 1 - Signs & Visual Communications, Part 1

Alphabet
a set of letters or symbols in a fixed order, used to represent the basic sounds of a language; in particular, the set of letters from A to Z.
Street Sign
 a sign visible from the street. sign - a public display of a message
         













Advertisement
a paid announcement, as of goods for sale, in newspapers or magazines, on radio or television, etc. the action of making generally known; a calling to the attention of the public








Constellation
a group of stars forming a recognizable pattern that is traditionally named after its apparent form or identified with a mythological figure. Modern astronomers divide the sky into eighty-eight constellations with defined boundaries

















ASCII Symbols
(American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is the most common format for text files in computers and on the Internet. In an ASCII file, each alphabetic, numeric, or special character is represented with a 7-bit binary number (a string of seven 0s or 1s). 128 possible characters are defined




Electronic symbols
  1. An electronic symbol is a pictogram used to represent various electrical and electronic devices (such as wires, batteries, resistors, and transistors) in a schematic diagram of an electrical or electronic circuit.







Morse Code
an alphabet or code in which letters are represented by combinations of long and short signals of light or sound




















American Sign Language
a form of sign language developed in the US and used also in English-speaking parts of Canada




















Glyph
a hieroglyphic character or symbol; a pictograph

The color white represents the the purity and innocence of the people in this country, the blue represses the color of the Chief, and the red represents the hardiness and valor. the stripes signify the original 13 colonies ad the stars signify the 50 states of the USA.
